QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second-straight game, the St. John's women's basketball team held its opponent to under 30 percent shooting from the floor as the Red Storm (4-3) defeated Lafayette, 64-46, at Carnesecca Arena Saturday afternoon.
"I thought we did a great job this afternoon. To be able to hold them to 15 points in the first half is great," Head Coach Joe Tartamella said. "The third quarter was a quicker pace, we ended up scoring 25 to their 18, but I thought that gave us a little energy."
Senior Jade Walker scored a team-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks in 25 minutes of play. Andrayah Adams matched her season-high with a 10-point showing and hit 2-of-6 from behind the arc.
Imani Littleton and Aaliyah Lewis both chipped in eight points. Lewis also dished out four assists, while Littleton had four rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
Akina Wellere led the Johnnies with seven rebounds and scored seven points in 32 minutes. The sophomore also had three assists and two steals.
Just two days after limiting Albany to just 28.0 percent shooting from the floor, St. John's held Lafayette (1-8) to just 27.8 percent shooting from the field. The Johnnies converted on 39.0 percent (23-59) of their tries and hit 12-of-17 from the free throw line.
In an evenly matched first quarter, Lafayette took an early 3-2 lead, but the Johnnies quickly answered and took control from there.
St. John's used a balance scoring attack to take a 12-9 lead into the second quarter. Walker and Lewis both had four points in the opening 10 minutes. Crystal Simmons knocked down a three with 3:23 left in the period to give the Johnnies an 11-5 lead at that point.
In the second, with St. John's leading 19-13 midway through the period, the Johnnies went on a 7-0 spurt to take a 13-point lead, 26-13, with 1:37 left before halftime. In the closing seconds of the first half, Sandra Udobi knocked down a jumper as St. John's took a 28-15 lead into the break.
St. John's continued to build its lead throughout the third, leading by as many as 21 after Adams drained a three pointer with 2:37 left in the quarter. After the Leopards trimmed the lead to 19 with a pair of free throws with 1:49 left, Adams hit a jumper to put the Johnnies back up 21, 51-30. St. John's eventually took a 53-33 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Lafayette cut the St. John's lead to 16 on two separate occasions in the fourth, but the Red Storm maintained its double-digit lead for the entirety of the quarter, closing out its second-straight win
St. John's wraps up its three-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts Rutgers at Carnesecca Arena. The first tip is slated for 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
