TOWSON, Md. - Despite outperforming Towson in nearly every facet of the game, the St. John's Women's Soccer team failed to register a goal and recorded a 0-0 tie with the Tigers on Friday afternoon.
Over 110 minutes of action, St. John's outshot Towson by a 26-3 margin, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Red Storm also held a decisive lead in corner kicks, registering seven to the Tigers' two.
Diana Poulin, the St. John's career leader in wins with 34, notched her third consecutive shutout to start the season. The two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the year, Poulin made two saves and now has 23 solo clean sheets to her name for her St. John's career, good enough for second in school history.
Taylor Sebalao made several big stops in net for the Tigers, as the senior goalkeeper from Scotch Plains, N.J., recorded seven saves.
The Red Storm set the tone early against the Tigers, outshooting Towson by a 9-1 margin in the first half. St. John's came close to finding the back of the net on several occasions, as Sebalao registered three saves and the Johnnies narrowly missed the cage more than once.
Towson's one shot of the first half found its target, but Poulin made an impressive stop to preserve the 0-0 tie.
St. John's maintained its intensity to begin the second half, but still struggled to put one past the keeper.
The Red Storm recorded what was perhaps its best chance of the second half with 11 minutes to play, as Sebalao turned away a breakaway try from Lucy Whipp.
After 90 minutes failed to yield a winner, the two squads headed to overtime.
St. John's registered a pair of great chances in the first overtime period, as a Towson defender took possession away from Samie Scaffidi in the box three minutes into the frame. Just a few moments later, it looked as though a Morgan Tinari try might sneak through, but a Tiger field player made the stop with her feet and sent it out of the zone.
St. John's threatened again in the second extra period, as a Christina Bellero try was blocked just in front of the net, leading to the Red Storm's fifth corner of the afternoon. The Red Storm had another chance off the ensuing corner kick from Tinari, but Towson was able to clear.
The Red Storm was able to register two more corner kicks before the clock struck 0:00, but the contest ended with the scoreboard reading 0-0.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Sunday, traveling to Loyola Maryland at 4 p.m.
