QUEENS, N.Y. - After starting the season in dominant fashion with sweeps over Big Ten foe Rutgers and host-school Bryant at the Bryant Hampton Inn-vitational, St. John's will be back in action as it travels to Iona for a matchup on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Hynes Athletic Center.
LAST TIME OUT: ST. JOHN'S PICKS UP TWO SWEEPS
The Red Storm knocked off Big Ten opponent Rutgers, 3-0, in its season-opener, which marked the seventh-straight season the Johnnies were victorious in their opening-match.
The Red Storm's two Italian newcomers were excellent in their collegiate debuts, as Erica Di Maulo notched 39 assists and eight digs, while Gaia Traballi added 11 kills along with four digs.
Against Bryant, preseason All-BIG EAST selection Julia Cast recorded a team-high 11 kills and Danisha Moss was terrific in front of net registering a match-high five block assists.
SCOUTING THE GAELS (0-3)
Iona has struggled to begin the season after losing its first three matches of the season at the Central Connecticut State Invitational to CCSU, Fordham and Lehigh.
Head coach Patric Santiago is in his first season with the Gaels after serving as the head coach at SUNY Farmingdale for the previous seven seasons.
The top outside hitter for the Gaels is sophomore Claire Archibald, who leads the team with 3.09 kills per set. Last season, she posted a team-high 3.32 kill per set.
Emma Rose, another sophomore, takes over the starting setter position after Iona graduated its top assist leader from 2015. The Coventry, Conn., native has 6.54 a/s, while adding 24 digs on the young season.
The Gaels went 10-20 last season and were picked to finish eighth in the MAAC preseason coaches' poll.
The Red Storm owns a perfect, 8-0, all-time record against the Gaels, including a 3-0 home victory last season on Sept. 1 at Carnesecca Arena.
