The Red Storm heads to New Haven to close out a three-game road swing that saw the team register a pair of ties in Baltimore last weekend. The Johnnies began the trip with a 0-0 draw against Towson before playing Loyola to a 1-1 stalemate on Sunday afternoon. Despite the results, the Red Storm was clearly the more dominant team in each of the two contests, outshooting their opponents by a combined margin of 39-5 over 220 minutes of action.
For her efforts against Towson and Loyola, Anna Maria Baldursdottir was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time in her career on Monday. The sophomore defender from Gardabaer, Iceland, led a St. John's backline that surrendered only one goal and five shots all weekend, keeping the Red Storm's season-long goals against average at a stellar 0.22. The 2015 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selection also recorded an assist on Christina Bellero's goal against the Greyhounds.
A stalwart in the St. John's goal for the past four years, Diana Poulin has been playing spectacularly for Head Coach Ian Stone to start the 2016 season. The two-time reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper has registered three shutouts in four tries on the campaign, tied for the national lead in that category. The Hauppauge, N.Y., native also ranks 12th among active Division I goalkeepers with 23 career shutouts and is the St. John's all-time leader in wins with 34.
SCOUTING YALE
Yale, a perennial contender in the Ivy League, is off to a hot start in 2016, winning its opening three matches by a considerable margin.
After downing Bryant, 2-1, at home to start the campaign on Aug. 26, the Bulldogs defeated Sacred Heart, 4-0, on Aug. 28 before cruising by Stony Brook three days later by the same score.
Three Bulldogs have found the back of the net on multiple occasions this season, led by sophomore midfielder Sofia Griff with three goals. Sophomore forward Michelle Alozie and freshman forward Aerial Chavarin have also tallied two goals apiece in 2016.
The Elis have employed a goalkeeper by committee in their first three games with a trio of players, Jane Buckley, Alyssa Fagel and Martiza Grillo, seeing nearly equal time in net.
ST. JOHN'S VS. YALE -- THE SERIES
Located less than 100 miles away from one another, St. John's and Yale have squared off on four occasions in the history of the two programs with each team winning a pair of games.
The last meeting between the teams came on Sept. 11, 2011, as the Red Storm downed the Bulldogs, 2-1, at Belson Stadium. Senior forward Jen Leaverton, now a St. John's assistant coach, scored the game-winner for the Johnnies in that contest.
