QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. John's cross country team will make a short trip out to Old Westbury, N.Y., on Saturday to run in the inaugural NYIT Invitational on the NYIT Old Westbury campus. The women's 5K race kicks off at 10 a.m., and will be followed by the men's 8K.
"We are looking forward to building on our good opening outing last week at the Fordham Fiasco with quality efforts at the NYIT Invite in Old Westbury on Saturday," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Antonia Howard has shown she is in good form after the summer and our freshmen trio of Therese Gallagher, Stephanie Gerland, and Jacqueline Gallagher showed that they can compete at a high collegiate level. Nicole McCarthy and Bailey Brewer will aim to move up spots in the second race of their sophomore seasons."
The 5K grass and woodchip course winds through the picturesque NYIT Old Westbury Campus and features several points that cross pavement or sidewalk.
St. John's returns to action following a fifth-place team finish at the season-opening Fordham Fiasco 5K race last Saturday. Antonia Howard led the way for the Johnnies with a fifth-place individual finish. Overall, St. John's finished with 152 team points and an average time of 20:59.48 for 5K.
A trio of freshmen also came up big for St. John's in the season-opening race as Therese Gallagher, Stephanie Gerland and Jackie Gallagher all crossed with top-50 finishing times.
"The NYIT meet is new on our schedule and we are excited to be able to compete on Long Island," added Hurt. "We're also very excited to have Melissa Hidalgo run this weekend after sitting out the Fordham meet. She has looked great in practice and will be a big part of our team's success this year."
