QUEENS, N.Y. - After anchoring the Red Storm to its second consecutive shutout and seventh on the year on Sunday, women's soccer sophomore Anna Maria Baldursdottir has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Baldursdottir earns her first career major BIG EAST weekly honor after receiving her first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod on Aug. 29.
Baldursdottir led a Red Storm defense that allowed four total shots, two of which were on target, in the Red Storm's BIG EAST opener on Saturday. The sophomore also scored the game-winning goal, converting on a penalty kick in the 69th minute.
The goal was Baldursdottir's second game-winning goal of the year, giving her the team lead in that category.
The Red Storm returns to action on Thursday night, when it hosts Butler in a BIG EAST battle at Belson Stadium. The first kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
