The Red Storm continues BIG EAST play after a 1-0 win at Seton Hall in its conference opener last Saturday. The Johnnies are outscoring their opponents by a 15-4 margin and have had 11 different players find the back of the net this season. Last year, only nine different player recorded goals for the Red Storm over the course of 20 games. After the win over Seton Hall, the Red Storm received votes in the lastest NSCAA Top-25 Poll released Tuesday.
Anna Maria Baldursdottir converted on a penalty kick in the 69th minute to give the Johnnies the 1-0 win at Seton Hall. The deciding goal was her second of the season, tying her for the team lead in that category. For her efforts both offensively and defensively, Baldursdottir was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday.
Two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Diana Poulin continues to shine in net. After making two saves in the shutout win at Seton Hall, the senior's goals-against average is 0.28, while her save percentage has risen to .900. Poulin's goals-against average ranks fourth in Division I, while her save percentage is 11th. Poulin's seven shutouts are tied for fourth in the country and the senior is just five away from tying the St. John's career record of 32 set by Kristin Russell.
As a team, the Red Storm's 0.372 goals-against average ranks sixth in the nation. The Johnnies have shutout seven of their 10 opponents this season.
The Red Storm sophomore class has been a driving force for the team this season, recording nine of the squad's 15 goals.
SCOUTING BUTLER
The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-0 win over Villanova in their BIG EAST opener.
Butler improved to 8-2-1 overall and has won five straight games.
Serina Kashimoto ranks 12th in the nation and first in the BIG EAST with 20 points this season. She was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List this preseason.
ST. JOHN'S VS. BUTLER- THE SERIES
St. John's and Butler have met five times in the history of the two programs, with the Johnnies maintaining a 3-2-0 advantage in those matches. The series history has proven to be evenly matched, with all five games being decided by one goal and two of those contests needed overtime to crown a winner.
The Red Storm is 2-0-0 at home against the Bulldogs.
The last meeting between the two schools came during the 2015 BIG EAST Tournament. Butler topped St. John's en route to winning the BIG EAST title.
