QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a convincing 73-49 win over St. Francis Brooklyn to kick off the 2017-18 campaign, the St. John's women's basketball team will host William & Mary to close out a season-opening two-game homestand on Friday night.
The Red Storm and Tribe are scheduled for a 7 p.m. first tip live on ESPN3 with Nkwa Asonye and former St. John's standout Sky Lindsay providing the call.
St. John's showed a great ability to close in its season opener, ending the game on a 17-0 run over the final 4:50 of the fourth quarter. The Johnnies hit each of their final six tries from the field while forcing the Terriers to go 0-for-7 down the stretch.
Defensively, the Red Storm forced 21 turnovers and rejected 14 shots, tying the program record set back in 1990. The Johnnies also got a huge boost from the bench as the reserves scored 35 points on the day, led by Andrayah Adams and Qadashah Hoppie, who scored 16 points apiece.
Hoppie's 16 points in her collegiate debut were the most for a St. John's rookie since Shenneika Smith scored 17 points against Stony Brook in 2009 to begin her career. For her efforts, Hoppie was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Maya Singleton posted a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points while sending back five shots and coming away with a career-high four steals in 33 minutes. Singleton landed on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after her solid outing last Friday.
William & Mary enters Friday night's contest with an overall record of 2-0 after defeating Howard and Fairfield to open the 2017-18 campaign. Prior to the start of the season, the Tribe was predicted to finish third in the CAA Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing fourth in the league last season.
Junior Bianca Boggs has been leading the offense early in the season, averaging 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in 32.0 minutes per game. Boggs went off for 26 points and 11 rebounds against Howard before scoring 12 points against Fairfield. Senior Jenna Green narrowly missed a triple-double against the Stags, finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in 40 minutes. Through two games, the Tribe has seen success from deep, converting 35.5 percent of their three point attempts.
Friday's contest between St. John's and William & Mary will be just the second all-time meeting between the two schools. Last season, the Red Storm defeated the Tribe, 73-57, on the road to kick off the 2016-17 season. Jade Walker led the offense with 18 points while the defense limited the Tribe to just 33.9 percent shooting from the field and 17.6 percent from behind the arc.
Following the contest against William & Mary, the Red Storm will head south to take part in the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Johnnies will take on Western Michigan on Friday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. before facing either Rutgers or defending National Champion South Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 25. St. John's will then wrap up play on Sunday, Nov. 26 against an opponent yet to be determined. FloHoops.com will provide a live stream of all the games during the Gulf Coast Showcase.
