QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's tennis standout freshman Jessica Livianu has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for the first time in her collegiate career, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
The No. 61 nationally ranked player led the Johnnies to a pair of BIG EAST victories this weekend at Marquette and DePaul. Thanks to her efforts at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions, the Red Storm, topped both BIG EAST foes, 6-1 and 5-2, respectively.
Livianu cruised in singles action, as the freshman did not drop a set all weekend long. Against Marquette, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native topped Silvia Ambrosio, 6-1, 6-1. Livianu then went on to beat Yulia Shupenia of DePaul, 7-6, 6-0.
With these two victories, Livianu improved her 2017 spring singles record to an outstanding 10-1, with her only loss to No. 34-ranked Andrea Lazaro of Florida International University (No. 38). The freshman is now 29-4 while playing singles at St. John's.
Livianu also paired up with senior Anna Morozova for a pair of doubles victories this weekend. The duo topped Amrbosio and Diana Tokar of Marquette, 6-2, on Friday, before besting Shupenia and Ana Vladutu of DePaul, 6-4, on Sunday.
St. John's handed DePaul its first loss at home in four years.
Livianu and the Johnnies gear up this weekend for a third-straight BIG EAST matchup, as Villanova visits the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
