QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team (6-7) stayed undefeated at home with a pair of wins at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., on Friday. The wins snapped a four-match losing streak for Head Coach Eric Rebhuhn's squad.
The team's first match of the day came against the three-time defending Northeast Conference Champions Bryant Bulldogs. The Johnnies dropped the No. 1 doubles matchup, but rebounded with a pair of victories to secure the doubles point before heading into singles play.
The sophomore pairing of Alan Nunez Aguilera and Dusan Vukicevic took down Bryant's Josh Kliger and Jorge Ortiz-Garcia, 6-3, at the No 2 matchup. Senior Roberto Livi and sophomore Alex Roszkowski won at the No. 3 slot by the same score.
The Johnnies finished up the victory with three unanswered wins in singles play. Sophomore Andrei Crapcenco defeated Guido Argentini, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 singles spot. After Luka Sucevic took the point at the No. 3 spot, freshman Ognjen Trejgut took down Artur Jakubowski at the No. 5 to clinch the victory for the Johnnies.
The three remaining singles matches, at the No. 1, 4 and 6 spots, went unfinished.
The Johnnies went on to face another NEC opponent, Farleigh Dickinson University, later on in the day. St. John's made quick work of the Knights in doubles play, taking matches in the top two spots to clinch the doubles point. Livi and Roszkowski did not finish their match at the No. 3 slot.
Livi, the No. 123 player in the nation, took the No. 1 singles matchup, 6-3, 7-5. The Johnnies took every singles point against FDU, with the clincher coming in Nunez's 6-4, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot.
St. John's wraps up its weekend at Columbia on Sunday.
