WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The St. John's men's tennis team (7-8) used a late surge to knock off William & Mary, 5-2, at the Millie West Tennis Facility in Williamsburg, Va. on Tuesday afternoon. The Johnnies snapped the Tribe's (6-6) 17-match home winning streak.
St. John's swept all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the afternoon. Ognjen Trejgut and Luka Sucevic started it off with a hard-fought 7-5 victory over William & Mary's Tristan Bautil and Addison Appleby in the top doubles slot. Roberto Livi and Alex Roszkowski also worked hard for their win, a 7-5 triumph in the No. 3 slot that clinched the doubles point.
Alan Nunez Aguilera and Dusan Vukicevic pulled through with a narrow 7-6 victory in the No. 2 slot over the Tribe's Ryan Newman and Aidan Talcottt.
The Johnnies broke a 1-1 tie when Sucevic took down Christian Cargill, 7-5, 6-2, in the No. 2 singles spot. William & Mary quickly countered with another singles victory of their own at No. 5 slot, where Trejgut fell to Damon Niquet 6-2, 7-6.
After the Tribe drew level, the Johnnies rattled off three straight singles wins to claim the day. Andrei Crapcenco clinched the victory with back-and-forth, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 victory over Alec Miller. It was his 11th victory in singles play this season.
The marquee matchup of the day featured a pair of nationally ranked players at the top singles spot. Roberto Livi, ranked No. 123 in Divison I, took on the Talcott, who stood at 119th in the country. Livi grinded out a victory of the Johnnies in the final matchup of the day, upending Talcott, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
The victory was Livi's third against a ranked opponent this season. He took down No. 55 Vinny Gillespie of Drake, in the fall, and defeated No. 115, Chris Vrabel of Cornell, in a Red Storm loss earlier this month.
The Red Storm returns to action Thursday against Virginia Commonwealth University, part of a three-match trip throughout the state of Virginia.
