QUEENS, N.Y. - After helping the Red Storm improve to 14-2 on the season with a pair of wins in Norfolk, Va., this past weekend, Sean Mooney has garnered his first BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week accolade, it was announced this morning by the league office.
Mooney becomes the second St. John's hurler in just three weeks to receive the honor, as Ryan McAuliffe was named the conference's pitcher of the week on March 6.
Making his second career start and just the fifth overall appearance of his St. John's tenure, Mooney delivered a dazzling performance against Iona on Friday afternoon, tossing eight innings of one-run ball en route to his first victory in red and white. In those eight frames, the Marmora, N.J., native surrendered just three hits while striking out six and walking one. On the heels of a 10-strikeout performance in his first start at Liberty, Mooney lowered his ERA to 1.25 against the Gaels. The rookie right hander leads the team in strikeouts with 29 and has surrendered just four walks in 21.2 innings pitched on the year.
Nationally, the freshman ranks in the top 50 in Division I in strikeouts per nine innings (12.1) and sits inside the top 10 among all pitchers in WHIP (0.69).
St. John's returns to action tomorrow, traveling to Yaphank, N.Y., for a 3 p.m. matchup with Saint Peter's at Baseball Heaven.
