NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Behind a two-round score of 2-over 146 at the Quidnessett Golf Course, freshman Gerald Mackedon closed out day one of the Rhode Island Invitational tied for eighth.
Following a slow start, St. John's fired a 4-over 292 for the tournament second best round of the day to put the team in a 10th place tie with a score of 35-over 611.
Mackedon is eyeing his third top-10 finish as the rookie is only four strokes behind overall leader, Dawson Jones of Rhode Island.
Freshman James Smoot jumped 17 spots to 38th after carding a 2-over 74 in round two.
Sophomore Seung Yub Baek is at 11-over 155, while senior Sean Byrne recorded a 13-over 157.
The Johnnies return to the greens Tuesday morning for the final round of the Rhode Island Invitational.
