Adriana Wright and Nyla Woods Sweep BIG EAST Track Awards

QUEENS, N.Y. - After a weekend full of top conference marks for the St. John's track & field team, Adriana Wright and Nyla Woods swept the BIG EAST Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Wright was named the BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week while Woods earned the conference's Field Athlete of the Week honor.
Both Wright and Woods took on some of the top track & field competition in the Southeastern United States this past weekend at the Georgia Tech Invite On April 21-22 in Atlanta, Ga.
En route to winning the conference's track athlete of the week award, Wright put up a pair of BIG EAST-leading marks in the 400-meter hurdle and the 100-meter dash. The Red Storm sprinter ran a 400-meter hurdle time of 1:00.29, ranking 56th in the East Region and 94th in the NCAA. Wright also placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.83 seconds.
In the field events, Woods took second overall in her specialty event, the hammer throw, with a BIG EAST-leading mark of 58.38 meters. Her throw ranks 41st in the East and 75th in the NCAA this season. In four attempts at the hammer throw this outdoor season, the Fayetteville, Ga., native has won the event three times and finished as the runner up once.
St. John's heads down to Philadelphia, Pa., this weekend to compete in the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field on April 27-29.
