Onourah and Garcia-Moreno conclude historic seasons in Lexington
LEXINGTON Ky. – St. John's track and field completed the first day of women's competition at the NCAA East Regional in Lexington, Ky. on Thursday evening.
Chinenye Josephine Onourah and Naiara Garcia-Moreno competed in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run respectively. The pair helped continue the streak of Johnnies appearing at an NCAA Championship for the 33rd consecutive year.
Onourah kicked off the evening in the quarter mile, finishing with a time of 54.52 seconds in the preliminary round at the University of Kentucky Track and Field Complex.
The Bangkok, Thailand native concludes her Red Storm career with five individual BIG EAST titles in the 400-meters. Two weeks ago, she ran a season-best time of 52.68 seconds in the finals at the conference championship to claim her fifth title in the event, spanning both the indoor and outdoor season. The mark ranks third on the outdoor program's all-time list.
In addition to her individual success, the graduate student helped the Red Storm to four 4x400-meter relay golds over her tenure. She most recently anchored the relay squad to another BIG EAST title, breaking a 28-year-old program record with a time of 3-minutes, 35.15 seconds on May 16.
Garcia-Moreno wrapped up her sophomore season with a time of 2:06.82 in the first round of the 800-meter run.
The Malaga, Spain, product finished the year by collecting a pair of medals in the half mile. During the indoor season, she set a program record with a silver medal time of 2:02.94 at the BIG EAST Championships in Chicago. Two weekends ago, she added a bronze medal to her collection at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships with a time of 2:03.81. The race shaped up to be the fastest 800-meter final in the meet's history, as all three medalists dipped under the previous meet record of 2:04.03.
Jamora Alves will aim to punch her ticket Eugene, Ore., looking to make her third trip to the NCAA National Championship meet where she was named a USTFCCCA All-American Honorable Mention in 2023 and 2025 in the discus.
