QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm made the short trip to Hempstead, N.Y., yesterday afternoon to face the Hofstra Pride, who has won 20 or more matches each of the past three seasons, and came away with a 2-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-20) victory.
Leading the Red Storm attack was the 2015 All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree, Julia Cast with a team-high nine kills on a .283 hitting percentage, while also taking on two digs, two blocks and an ace. Danisha Moss chipped in six kills on a stellar .500 attacking percentage and the Red Storm's kill and dig leader from a season ago, Gaia Traballi notched seven kills and eight digs.
The freshman Hanna Wagner made her presence felt in front of the net, registering a team-best five blocks and also added three kills. The 6-3 newcomer from Schwerin, Germany, finished the end of the 2016 regular season strong with at least four blocks in the last five matches of the season.
Erica Di Maulo engineered the St. John's offense with 27 assists and also finished with six digs on the afternoon. Another impact freshman, Amanda Sanabia collected 11 digs and the junior Delaney D'Amore picked up six digs in the victory over the Pride.
The St. John's volleyball team continues to get contributions up-and-down the lineup this spring as they look to build some momentum heading into the fall.
The Johnnies return to the court tomorrow for their first spring tournament of 2017, as the squad travels to the capital of New York to take on in-state foes Marist, Syracuse and Albany.
