QUEENS, N.Y. - After tossing six innings of shutout ball in his final start of the regular season, St. John's ace Sean Mooney has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
A two-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week in March, Mooney has claimed a spot on the conference's honor roll for the fifth-straight week and the sixth time overall this season.
A native of Marmora, N.J., Mooney allowed just four hits and a walk over six shutout innings for the Red Storm on Friday afternoon in its series opener against Villanova, improving to 8-0 on the season. Ranking second in the nation in WHIP (0.76) and fourth in ERA (1.10), Mooney is the only freshman in the country to place inside the top 40 of both categories, let alone the top four.
Leaving the game after just 82 pitches to rest up for this week's BIG EAST Championship, Friday's game marked only the second start of the season in which Mooney did not throw at least seven full innings. The other such outing came in his first career start against Liberty on March 10, when Mooney struck out 10 opposing batters in just five innings of work.
St. John's will kick off play at the 2017 BIG EAST Baseball Championship on Thursday, facing off against Xavier at 3:30 p.m. ET at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. All opening round games of the tournament will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on the FOX Sports GO app and at FOXSportsGO.com.
