QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's tennis head coach Lauren Leo unveiled her team's 2017 fall slate on Thursday. The schedule features six individual tournaments to be played over the next three months, highlighted by Jessica Livianu's participation in the Oracle/ITA Masters Tournament.
St. John's opens up the tournament season close to home as it prepares for the Stony Brook Invitational on Sept. 8-10. Held at the University Courts in Stony Brook, N.Y., this is the team's third appearance at this invite in as many years. Last season, the Johnnies took home two singles flight championships and one doubles flight championships.
Just five days later, the Red Storm will head into Manhattan for the Columbia Invite on Sept. 15-17, at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Last season saw the Red Storm win 14 singles and doubles matches over the three-day event.
At the end of September, sophomore Jessica Livianu will head to Malibu, Calif. to compete in the Oracle/ITA Masters Tournament. This national collegiate championship event will be held at Pepperdine University and the Malibu Racquet Club and will feature the returning Player of the Year from each Division I athletic conference with one additional wild card spot. The tournament will consist of a double elimination 32-player men's singles draw and a double elimination 32-player women's singles draw, along with a single elimination 32-team mixed doubles draw.
Prior to fall postseason play, St. John's will play at the Cissie Leary Invitational on Sept. 22-24, at the Hect Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The Red Storm will return to the City of Brotherly Love for the ITA Regional Championships in Philadelphia, Pa., on Oct. 18-21. St. John's will close its fall season with a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. for the UB Indoor Invite on Nov. 3-5 at the Miller Tennis Center.
In 2016-17, the Red Storm wrapped up one of the most successful seasons in program-history. The Johnnies tallied an 18-4 overall record, 8-1 in BIG EAST play, marking the program's most wins since 1981-82. Head Coach Lauren Leo also accomplished a feat of her own, grabbing the most wins-ever by a St. John's head coach in her first two seasons at the helm. Leo is a combined 32-9 in her career with the Johnnies.
