Red Storm resumes fall action on Oct. 20 against Manhattan
The St. John's baseball team kicked off its fall season with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, shutting out the Swedish National Team by a score of 26-0 at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Friday night.
Seven Johnnies logged two or more RBIs on the night, highlighted by a pair of five-RBI showings from Wyatt Mascarella and Brandon Bossard. Andrew DuPont went 3-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs, while Mike Antico, Ryan Markey, Colin Wetterau and Rudy Aguilar knocked in two runs apiece. Chris Stefl and Christian Pierre logged two hits apiece and also drove in a run.
Stefl, Nick Mondak, Matt Semon, and Chris Henry combined to throw nine shutout innings, limiting Sweden to just five hits and a pair of walks. Mondak started the game, allowing a leadoff single before promptly working a double play and starting a string of nine-straight outs. The junior southpaw struck out three.
Henry led the team with four strikeouts in two innings pitched.
St. John's jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, as Antico laced a leadoff triple before a Bossard sac fly to left brought him home. Markey added another sac fly later in the inning, putting the Johnnies ahead by two.
After another 1-2-3 inning from Mondak, the Johnnies plated four more in the home half of the second. Leadoff errors with Aguilar and DuPont at the plate set the table for Bossard, who ripped a two-run double to left. Mascarella and Stefl chipped in run-scoring hits before the inning came to a close, giving the Red Storm a 6-0 lead heading into the third.
Mondak closed out his evening with another stellar frame in the top of the third, striking out two of the three batters he faced. In the home half, the Johnnies put forth an equally impressive effort, hanging up 10 runs and breaking the game wide open. After three bases-loaded walks put a trio of runs on the board, Mascarella brought home three more with a bases-clearing double to right center. DuPont and Antico added RBI doubles and Aguilar recorded a run-scoring fielder's choice before the close of the frame, putting the Johnnies ahead 16-0.
The Red Storm were not done after their big inning in the third, plating eight more runs in the fourth. Markey, Miller, DuPont, Pierre and Wetterau picked up RBI hits in the frame, while Mascarella and Bossard also drove in runs with a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively.
The Johnnies went without runs for the first time in the fifth and six innings before adding single runs in the seventh and eighth. Aguilar lifted a sac fly in the seventh before Justin Wright walked with the bases loaded in the eighth.
St. John's will return to fall action next Saturday, playing host to Manhattan at 12 p.m.
