The Red Storm will look for its fifth win of non-league play
After seeing its four-game unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday night by No. 8 Creighton, the St. John's men's soccer team will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday, hosting Princeton for its non-conference finale at Belson Stadium.
The game, which is set to kick off at 7 p.m., will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Jon Yardley and Jon Perez on the call.
Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead early in the second half of Saturday's contest with Creighton, the Johnnies saw the league-leading Bluejays respond with three unanswered goals in the span of just 20 minutes to improve to 8-2-1 on the season and remain undefeated in conference play. The Red Storm played the final 27 minutes of the match with just nine men following a pair of red cards while Creighton finished the contest with 10 men.
Surrendering more than one goal in the same game for the first time since the squad's season opener on Aug. 24, St. John's saw its team goals against average move from 0.77 to 0.97 over the weekend. Despite suffering his first loss since August, Lenny Wilson tallied a season-high seven saves against the Bluejays. Additionally, one of his three goals allowed came on a Creighton penalty kick.
Tani Oluwaseyi recorded his third goal of the campaign against Creighton, etching his name on the score sheet for the first time since the Red Storm's overtime victory against Fairfield on Aug. 31. Of the Red Storm's 14 goals this season, half have been recorded by the freshman duo of Oluwaseyi and Skage Simonsen, the latter of whom picked up his third assist of the year on Oluwaseyi's 49th minute marker. Simonsen's 11 points rank sixth overall in the conference and are the highest such total by a BIG EAST freshman.
St. John's jumped to no. 58 in the latest NCAA RPI released on Monday. Led by Creighton at no. 11, three BIG EAST schools currently rank in the RPI Top 50, as Georgetown checks in at no. 41 and Xavier sits at no. 49. After St. John's, three additional BIG EAST teams rank inside the RPI Top 100, as DePaul (72), Providence (76) and Villanova (95) occupy spots among the nation's top squads.
Princeton enters the contest with a record of 5-4-1, including a two-game unbeaten streak and a 5-2-1 mark in the team's last eight decisions. All four of Princeton's losses have come by one goal.
The Tigers have spread around the scoring in 2018, as four different players have recorded at least two goals on the season. Jacob Schachner has played every minute between the pipes for Princeton this year, compiling a 0.76 goals against average and four shutouts.
St. John's and Princeton shared two common opponents on their 2018 non-conference slates, as both squads enjoyed one-goal wins over Temple and suffered 1-0 losses to Loyola Maryland.
The Red Storm and the Tigers will meet for the eighth-straight season in 2018 and the 12th time overall in the history of the two programs. The Johnnies possess a 5-3-3 all-time advantage over their foes from The Garden State, including a 4-2-1 edge in their last seven meetings. Jeremy Colvin, who leads the team with three goals so far in 2018, scored in the 85th minute of last year's meeting with Princeton to secure a 1-0 victory for the Tigers.
