Mickey Callaway to Headline 13th Annual Bullpen Winter Banquet

New York Mets manager to appear at Red Storm’s premier fundraiser on Jan. 30
Fresh off his first season as the manager of the New York Mets, Mickey Callaway will headline the St. John's baseball team's annual Bullpen Winter Banquet at Edison Ballroom on Jan. 30.
Widely considered one of the brightest young minds in baseball, Callaway came to the Mets after five seasons as the pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians. During that tenure, he helped guide Corey Kluber to a pair of American League Cy Young Awards while also leading the Tribe to the 2016 AL Pennant. The Indians topped the majors in strikeouts from 2014-17, highlighted by a then-major league record 1,614 punch outs in 2017.
Callaway has coaching experience at all levels of baseball, breaking into the professional ranks as the pitching coach of the Class-A Lake County Captains in 2010 before moving onto Class-A Advanced Kinston in 2011 and eventually assuming the role of the Indians' minor league pitching coordinator in 2012. Prior to joining the Indians organization, Callaway also served as the interim head coach at Division II Texas A&M International in 2008.
A seventh-round pick in the 1996 MLB Draft out of Ole Miss, Callaway played parts of five Major League seasons with Tampa Bay, Anaheim and Texas. The Germantown, Tenn., native was a member of the 2002 Angels squad that won the World Series.
Former St. John's great C.J. Nitkowski will once again serve as the evening's emcee. The highest draft pick in Red Storm history (1994- 1st round, 9th overall), Nitkowski is currently the lead commentator for the Texas Rangers on Fox Sports Southwest while also hosting a daily show on MLB Radio Network and serving as a member of the broadcast team for FOX's coverage of Major League Baseball.
In its 13th year, the Bullpen Winter Banquet serves as the primary annual fundraiser for the St. John's baseball program. All proceeds from the event help support facilities upgrades, the team's travel budget and other various enhancements crucial to the Red Storm's continued success.
St. John's is coming off a banner year in 2018, winning the program's ninth BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Championships. The Johnnies made their 37th NCAA Tournament appearance, a total that is tied with Oklahoma and Southern California for the eighth-highest total in Division I history.
Ed Blankmeyer, who guided the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year for the eighth time in his St. John's tenure, led the team to 40 wins for the second-straight year and the eighth time in his 23 years at the helm of the program.
Cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner and the evening's program set to commence at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the cost of $400 per person, but tables of 10 can be purchased for $3,750. St. John's Baseball graduates of the past decade can secure tickets to the event for $325.
