Johnnies enter play on the heels of a second-place finish at the Paradise Jam
Off to a 4-1 start on the road this season, the St. John's women's basketball team will kick off action inside Carnesecca Arena on Thursday evening, welcoming Delaware State for the team's home opener.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN3 with Nkwa Asonye and Sky Lindsay on the call from Queens.
The Red Storm will host its first home game on the heels of a second-place finish at the 2018 Paradise Jam. The Johnnies are coming off a 2-1 week with wins over Purdue and Ole Miss. St. John's lone loss of the season came in a back-and-forth battle against No. 2 UConn, that saw the Red Storm hold the Huskies to less than 70 points for just the fifth time in the last four seasons.
Staten Island native Qadashah Hoppie led the way for the Johnnies at the Paradise Jam, averaging 13.3 points per game. The sophomore guard enters play on Thursday after putting up a career-high 23 points against Ole Miss on Saturday. Seventeen of Hoppie's 23 points came from the charity stripe, to break a 16-year old program record previously held by Danielle Rainey who drained 15 against Texas-Arlington on Nov. 30, 2002.
Hoppie's 17 made free-throws against Ole Miss were the second-most in all of Division I this season. In addition, she made all 17 attempts, for the most makes without missing in a Division I game since Ke'Shunan James of Murray State went 20-for-20 on Nov. 18, 2017
Redshirt sophomore Tiana England was spectacular across the board for the Johnnies during the three-day tournament. England averaged 11.3 points, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game en route to earning a spot on the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team.
The 5-foot-7 guard was just shy of notching a double-double against Purdue, recording 14 points while dishing out nine assists. After finishing with a season-high 14 points against the Boilermakers, the Stamford, Conn., native had another stellar performance against the nationally ranked Huskies, netting 13 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out a total six assists. England wrapped up play with seven points and a pair of helpers against Ole Miss.
Kadaja Bailey averaged 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds at the Paradise Jam. In 28.3 minutes per game, the Long Beach, N.Y., native shot 61.1 percent from the floor (11-of-18) and 50.0 percent from three-point range. For her efforts, Bailey was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday for the first time in her career. The 6-foot guard has now finished in double figures in three of the team's five contests this season and leads the league's rookies in scoring with 9.8 points per game.
As a team, the St. John's defense has played a key factor in its early success, as the Johnnies rank second in the conference in rebounding defense (30.4) and third in both scoring defense (54.0), and turnover margin (+7.40).
Delaware State (1-3) comes to Queens after falling, 85-77, to the Delaware Blue Hens last Tuesday. Senior forward and two-time All-MEAC honoree, NaJai Pollard is the Hornets leading scorer, averaging 21.5 points per game. Overall, the Hornets are averaging 65.0 points per contest.
After squaring off with Delaware State, the St. John's women's basketball team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for an afternoon contest with Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m.
