Johnnies conclude the campaign following a second-straight postseason berth
The St. John's men's soccer team saw its 2018 campaign come to an end on Saturday night, falling to the Providence Friars, 1-0, at Anderson Stadium in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Red Storm (7-8-3) controlled possession in the early going before Providence (10-6-2) broke through on a controversial goal in the 14th minute. On a play that featured multiple short passes in front, the goal was initially waived off by an offside call from the assistant referee. The center referee then overturned that original offside call, making the goal good and putting Providence ahead 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Red Storm had a promising opportunity negated when a Providence defender knocked down Josiah Crawford in the box, but no call was made on the play.
The Johnnies registered two of the half's three total shots, but neither of the two found its target.
Simonsen registered the first two shots of the latter half, but Providence managed to block the first in front before Miller recorded his only save of the night on the second.
From there, Providence controlled possession for a majority of the contest, outshooting the Johnnies 6-0 down the stretch.
Senior goalkeeper Lenny Wilson stopped two of the three shots on target he faced in his final collegiate game. Providence's Colin Miller needed just one save to record his ninth shutout of the campaign.
