Former first round draft pick played four seasons in the majors
Former St. John's great Craig Hansen was inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame earlier this month at a ceremony in Chatham, Mass.
Hansen, the last St. John's hurler to be taken in the First Round of the MLB Draft, was enshrined as part of a six-person class on Dec. 1. In 2004 with the Harwich Mariners, Hansen put forth one of the best seasons ever recorded by a relief pitcher on the Cape, going 1-1 with 10 saves and 44 strikeouts in just 22.1 innings pitched. The Glen Cove, N.Y., native did not surrender an earned run the entire summer and earned a spot on the All-League Team.
The following spring as a junior at St. John's, Hansen recorded 14 saves, then a school record, and earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year honors after fanning 85 batters in 64 frames of work. A First Team All-American according to Baseball America, Hansen led the Red Storm the finals of the NCAA Corvallis Regional before falling to an Oregon State team that went on to make the College World Series that year and win national championships in 2006 and 2007.
Later that month, Hansen was selected 26th overall by the Boston Red Sox and soon became the first player in the organization's history to make his Major League debut the same here that he was drafted.
Hansen would go on to play four seasons with the Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates.
