Sean Mooney Earns Preseason All-America Nod from Collegiate Baseball

Junior right hander earned a total of seven All-America selections in his first two seasons
With the start of the 2019 college baseball season less than two months away, St. John's junior Sean Mooney has earned his first national recognition of the year, finding a spot on the Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America Second Team.
Mooney, who was named the publication's National Freshman Pitcher of the Year in 2017, has earned Preseason Second Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball for the second-straight year. Mooney was also named a Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American at the conclusion of his freshman year and a Second Team All-American after his sophomore campaign. Through two seasons, Mooney has garnered seven different All-American honors excluding preseason accolades.
Last season, Mooney earned unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team after going 11-3 with a 2.56 ERA in 16 starts. The Marmora, N.J., native tied the program record for wins, becoming the third player in program history to reach 11 victories in a single campaign. For his efforts, Mooney garnered Second Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings. Mooney also took home Third Team All-America honors from Perfect Game. The sophomore struck out 104 batters and surrendered just 28 walks in 95.0 innings of work, finishing the year ranked eighth on the program's single-season record list. On the season, opponents hit just .211 off Mooney.
Mooney exploded onto the national scene as a freshman, becoming just the second player in conference history to be named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year simultaneously. A Third Team All-American according to Collegiate Baseball, the NCBWA and the ABCA/Rawlings, Mooney was named the national freshmen pitcher of the year by the first two organizations. He finished the year 8-2 with a 1.71 ERA, striking out 88 and surrendering 16 walks in 100.0 innings. For his efforts, Mooney was rewarded with a spot on USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team.
Mooney and the Red Storm will kick off the 2019 season on Friday, Feb. 15, traveling to UCLA for a three-game set with the Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
