In a back-and-forth battle that saw four ties and four lead changes, the St. John's women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon, 77-67, inside Walsh Gymnasium.
Qadashah Hoppie led the Johnnies in points with 19, netting 10 of them in the first quarter alone. The sophomore guard sank two of her five tries from beyond the arc.
Alisha Kebbe also reached double figures for St. John's, scoring 11 points on a 3-of-8 shooting effort from the field. The Philadelphia native drained all five of her attempts from the charity stripe.
The team's leading rebounder, Kayla Charles, continued to be a force on the glass, grabbing a game-high 15 boards.
Despite the loss, Sunday's contest saw all nine St. John's players put up points for the Red Storm for the first time this season.
Seton Hall got the scoring started out of the gate, recording the first four points of the contest, to take an early 4-0 lead. Just over two minutes into the first frame, Hoppie snapped the Red Storm's early scoring drought with a triple to put St. John's on the board.
The Staten Island native was just getting started, less than a minute later Hoppie strung together a 5-0 run to give the Johnnies a two-point advantage, 8-6, at the 7:26 mark.
The Pirates knotted the game at eight with just over six minutes to play before St. John's locked in defensively, holding Seton Hall scoreless over the next four minutes.
It was a defensive tussle for both teams over the reminder of the first quarter but the Johnnies held strong to lead, 19-13, after the first 10 minutes of action.
Seton Hall came out hot in the second quarter using an offensive outburst to outscore the Johnnies, 13-3, and regain the lead, 29-26, at the midway mark in the second frame.
The Johnnies however slowly began to climb back into the game with a stout defense and a resurgent offense. With just under two minutes left to play in the half, and Seton Hall leading by three, 31-28, Shamachya Duncan drained a shot from downtown to knot the game at 31.
The Pirates then used a pair of shots from the charity stripe to regain the lead, 33-31. With just 35 seconds to play Tiana England scored her first points of the game with a clutch triple to send the Johnnies into the half with the lead, 34-33.
After the first 20 minutes of action Hoppie paced the squad with 13 points, while Charles brought down a team-high nine boards in just 15 minutes of action.
The Red Storm started the third quarter with a pair of free throws extending the teams lead to, 36-33. The two teams traded off buckets as the quarter wore on, before the Pirates set off on an 8-0 run to take over, 47-42 at the 5:23 mark.
Seton Hall did not look back over the remainder of the game, as the Pirates maintained the multi-possession lead into the fourth quarter, before using an 8-1 run to take its largest lead of the day at 64-51 with 7:39 to play. The Red Storm would come no closer than nine for the rest of the game.
