St. John's To Open Spring Slate with Loyola Intercollegiate

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's golf team is set to hit the links, for the first time in 2018, as the Red Storm travel to Goodyear, Ariz., on Sunday where they will be competing in the Loyola Intercollegiate for the third-straight year.
The 54-hole event will be played at Palm Valley Golf Club and features 19 teams: Air Force, Army West Point, Charleston, Connecticut, DePaul, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Gonzaga, Hartford, Loyola, Missouri State, Murray State, Seton Hall, Siena, SIU-Edwardsville, St. John's, Towson, UT-Martin and Xavier.
Ross Moore will lead the way for the Johnnies in the number one spot at the opening tournament, followed by the Gerald Mackedon, Andrew Baek, new comer Austin Briggs and Matthew Sweeney. Jonathan Spicci and James Smoot will participate in the individual portion of the tournament.
The Red Storm wrapped up the fall slate on a high note, with its best finish of the season, as the Johnnies secured at fourth-place tie at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. Baek paced the Johnnies in the two-day event, recording a seven-over 151 to finish in the top-15.
During last year's trip to the Loyola Intercollegiate, Mackedon posted an impressive six-under 66 in the opening round of the tournament, carding an overall four-under 212 to tie for 16th place and help the Red Storm to a top-10 finish.
Reigning champions, Connecticut will return to the field after turning over an 834 (-30) to take home the team title in 2017. Kyle Rodes of Eastern Michigan captured the individual championship by two strokes with a 203 (-13) finish.
The Loyola Intercollegiate, previously known as the Snowman Getaway, will be held at the 7,015-year Palms Course (par 72) at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona. It will feature two rounds on Sunday with the final round taking place on Monday. Both days will have a 9:45 a.m. ET shotgun start.
