QUEENS, N.Y. - In its lone match of the weekend, the St. John's men's tennis team rolled past Wagner, 6-1, on Friday at the National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (2-3) halted a three-game losing streak with the victory, and moved to 2-1 on its home court.
After dropping the opening match in doubles play, the Johnnies rallied as Dusan Vukicevic and Daniel Skripnik picked up a 6-4 win from the No. 3 position to send the all-important doubles point into the No. 2 court.
There, Luka Sucevic and Alex Roszkowski battled to a back-and-forth, 7-5, victory at the No. 2 to cement the doubles point for the home side.
Rolling into singles play with momentum, Andrei Crapcenco made quick work his opponent in the No. 3 spot, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Alan Nunez Aguilera collected another triumph for the Red Storm with a 6-2, 6-4 victory from the No. 2 position. Right behind his teammate was Sucevic, who continued to play well at the top spot by winning 6-1, 6-4.
The win by Sucevic earned the dual-match victory for St. John's, but the Johnnies were not finished yet. After Vukicevic battled back to take the first set, 6-4, the junior dominated the second set, 6-0, to earn another point for the Red Storm.
St. John's capped off the day with freshman Igor Maslov claiming the fifth singles win for the Johnnies by winning 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 4 hole.
Wagner (3-2) picked up its only point of the match with a victory at the No. 6 as Charlton Boyd defeated Roszkowski, 6-4, 6-3.
St. John's will return to action on Feb. 16 as the Johnnies host local-foe Hofstra at the National Tennis Center at noon.
