QUEENS, N.Y. - Despite limiting Fairfield to just two runs on four hits, the St. John's baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Stags on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Josh Shaw went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and an RBI to lead the Red Storm (9-7). In addition to logging his fifth multi-hit game of the season, Shaw also drew a walk and advanced a runner with a sac bunt.
With a fourth-inning single John Valente extended his hitting streak to 19 games dating back to last season. The graduate student also scored the lone run of the afternoon for St. John's.
Luke Stampfl and Anthony Brocato also added base knocks for the Johnnies.
Turner French recorded four stellar innings in relief of Jeff Belge, facing the minimum 12 batters and only allowing a runner to reach base on a hit-by-pitch in the sixth. The junior southpaw threw 49 pitches, 32 of which were strikes.
Joe LaSorsa tossed a scoreless ninth to maintain his perfect ERA on the campaign through seven appearances.
Fairfield (5-11) struck first in the top of the second, stringing together a walk, a single, a sac bunt, and an RBI groundout to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Stags used some small ball to piece together another tally in the fourth, using a walk, a single and a sac fly to plate the game's second run.
St. John's answered in the home half, as Valente laced a leadoff single up the middle before stealing second. Following back-to-back strikeouts from Stampfl and Brocato, Shaw stepped to the plate and smacked a base knock to center, scoring Valente and putting St. John's on the board.
The Red Storm threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but the Stags forced a grounder to short to end the Johnnies' opportunity.
After his team went down 1-2-3 in the eighth, Stampfl led off the home half of the ninth with a single to left. With runners on first and second following a Shaw base knock two batters later, the Red Storm lined into a game-ending double play to seal the victory for the Stags.
St. John's is scheduled to return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m., taking on Saint Peter's at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
