QUEENS, N.Y. -
Following a pair of perfect weeks at the top positions in both singles and doubles play, Luka Sucevic and Jessica Livianu have each been named BIG EAST Athletes of the Week by the conference office on Wednesday.
For the second time this season, Sucevic earned the honor of being Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week after the Red Storm finished with a 1-1 week against Saint Francis (Pa.) and Brown.
On Friday against Saint Francis (Pa.), Sucevic engaged in the best battle of the night, picking up a three-set victory. The junior won the opening set, 6-3, before falling in the second, 6-2, forcing a tiebreaking set. There, the Serbian turned on the afterburners with a 6-2 win. The victory helped the Johnnies to their eight-consecutive win, the longest since the 2011 season.
Just two days later against Brown, Sucevic rallied out of 0-1 hole to claim his ninth-straight win from the No. 1 position. The Serbian rebounded for a 6-2 victory in the second set and rolled to a 6-3 triumph in the tiebreaker.
The junior was also perfect in doubles play with a pair of wins from the No. 1 spot with partner Alan Nunez Aguilera.
Returning to the top of the conference for the second time in three weeks, Livianu was named the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week following a perfect Friday for the sophomore and the team.
Against Villanova in the conference opener, Livianu won her opening doubles match, 6-4, before the sophomore kept the momentum rolling in singles play, cruising to a pair of 6-1 victories in the 6-1 victory by the Red Storm.
Later that day, the Brooklyn native won another doubles match by a 6-4 score to begin the scoring against Saint Francis (Pa.) before capturing the first singles victory again for the Red Storm with a 6-0, 6-1 score at the No. 1.
Both teams return to action on Mar. 24 with the men hosting Marquette in BIG EAST play and the women heading to battle Penn.
