VESTAL, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball team completed its two-game sweep of Binghamton on Sunday afternoon, topping the Bearcats, 8-2, in Upstate New York.
Over the span of two games, the Red Storm (11-7) allowed just one earned run to Binghamton (4-13).
Kevin Magee improved to 2-2 on the year with yet another solid performance, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. The senior southpaw surrendered four hits and a walk, striking out three in the process.
Michael LoPresti, normally the team's Sunday starter, delivered three scoreless innings in relief of Magee, allowing just two hits while striking out a pair.
Four Johnnies registered multi-hit efforts in the victory, led by John Valente's 2-for-4, three-RBI performance. The graduate student from New Rochelle extended his hitting streak to 21 games dating back to last season and has now reached base in 34-consecutive contests.
Wyatt Mascarella went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Robert Boselli III went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Matt Woods also logged a pair of base knocks, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Jamie Galazin also drove in a run, while Chris Stefl registered a hit.
The Bearcats got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, scoring an unearned run for their first tally of the weekend.
With two outs in the ensuing frame, the Red Storm strung together five-straight hits, driving across four runs and taking a 4-1 lead. Boselli, Stefl, Mascarella and Woods recorded four-consecutive base knocks before Valente brought home the last two with a double down the left field line.
After two-straight 1-2-3 frames from Magee, the Bearcats struck again in the home half of the fourth, tallying a single run after loading the bases with one out to cut the St. John's lead to 4-2.
The Johnnies built their lead back with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Mascarella brought home the first run, singling home Boselli from second with one out in the seventh. It was then Boselli's turn to bring home a runner in the eighth, walking with the bases loaded to put the Red Storm ahead by four, 6-2, heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Red Storm added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth, as Valente and Galazin drove in runs to push the St. John's lead to six heading into the final frame.
Joe Kelly came on to pitch the ninth, striking out both batters he faced before Turner French came on and recorded the game's final out.
St. John's will play a midweek contest with Wagner on Tuesday before traveling to Minnesota for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.
