QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team dropped its opening matchup of the three-game set with Seton Hall on Friday afternoon, falling to the Pirates 9-8 at Red Storm Field.
The Johnnies (13-21, 4-3 BE) tallied 13 hits to the Pirates' eight, but stranded six runners over the course of the game.
Despite the loss, Gretchen Bowie continued her hot streak, recording three hits in as many at bats while driving in two runs as a result of a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Bowie has registered a perfect 7-for-7 effort at the plate in back-to-back games, recording a total three home runs in two contests.
Lauren Zick, Jessi Bryant and Kaitlin Mattera all registered a pair of hits for St. John's. Bryant went 2-for-4 at the plate, recording an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.
Following a three-run top of the first for the Pirates, the Red Storm plated a run in the bottom of that same frame, when Marissa Rizzi reached on an error to score Krystal Puga and put St. John's on the board.
After scoreless second inning for both squads, Seton Hall tacked on another run in the top of the third extending their lead to 4-1.
St. John's answered in the fourth plating two runs on five hits in the home half of the inning to cut the Pirates lead to one.
In the top of the fifth, Seton Hall registered five more runs off of four hits to extend their lead to 9-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Johnnies wasted no time responding, as Christina Melendez singled to center field, one batter later Rizzi ripped a double to left, Bryant backed that with an RBI double of her own, scoring both Melendez and Rizzi to cut Seton Hall's lead to 9-5. In the squads very next at bat, Bowie blasted a two-run homer, marking her third in two days and making it a two-run ball game.
The Johnnies tacked on one more run in the bottom of that same inning before both teams went scoreless over the sixth and seventh as the Pirates came away with a 9-8 victory.
The Red Storm will close out the series with Seton Hall at Red Storm Field on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon, both games will be available on ESPN3.
