QUEENS, N.Y. - Anchored by another nearly flawless performance from its pitching staff, the St. John's baseball team won its sixth-straight game overall and its fourth-conseuctive decision to open BIG EAST play on Friday afternoon, downing Creighton, 6-2, at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Sean Mooney dazzled over 6.2 frames of scoreless work, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth and improving his record to 7-1 on the season. The sophomore right hander surrendered just one hit and three walks while striking out eight. Friday marked the second-straight game that a St. John's pitcher brought a no-no into the sixth, as Jeff Belge went 5.2 without a base knock on Wednesday against Iona.
Gavin Hollowell recorded the final four outs of the game to notch his second save of the year.
Mooney, Hollowell and Joe LaSorsa combined to limit the Bluejays to just three hits on the afternoon.
Anthony Brocato left the yard for the team-leading sixth time this season and recorded a sac fly to finish with a pair of RBIs.
Josh Shaw, Luke Stampfl, Wyatt Mascarella and Mike Antico also registered a hit and drove in a run for the Johnnies on Friday.
John Valente and Jamie Galazin also tallied base knocks on the afternoon. With his hit, Valente has now reached base in 45-straight games dating back to last season, the longest active streak in the nation.
St. John's (20-10, 4-0 BIG EAST) wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first, as three-straight singles from Valente, Galazin and Shaw plated the game's opening run before the inning's first out could be recorded. After a sac bunt from Robert Boselli III, Stampfl lifted a sac fly to right, scoring Galazin from third and making it 2-0 in favor of the Red Storm.
Following a 10-pitch, 1-2-3 inning from Mooney, Brocato led off the bottom of the second with a moon shot to left center, extending the St. John's lead to three.
After a scoreless third, the Red Storm added another tally in the home half of the fourth to bump its lead to four. Stampfl led off the frame with a single up the middle before moving into scoring position on a Mascarella sac bunt. Two batters later, Antico smacked a double over the head of the left fielder, easily scoring Stampfl and making it 4-0 Johnnies.
Creighton (20-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) brought home its only two runs of the game in the top of the eighth, but the Johnnies promptly responded with two of their own in the home half. After Shaw walked and Boselli was hit by a pitch to give the Red Storm a pair of base runners, Mascarella lined a single to right center, scoring Shaw and bumping the lead back to three. Next up was Brocato, who drove in his second run of the game with a sac fly to make it 6-2 in favor of the Johnnies.
Hollowell retired the Bluejays in order to close the door in the ninth, sealing the win for the Red Storm.
Originally scheduled to play single games on Saturday and Sunday, the Red Storm and Bluejays will now play a doubleheader tomorrow at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 1 p.m. A live audio broadcast of both games will be available on RedStormSports.com.
