St. John’s Travels to Creighton for Showdown with Bluejays
9/26/2018 12:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on Thursday evening
Coming off of a loss to a top-10 opponent in Georgetown on Sunday afternoon in the Red Storm's BIG EAST opener, the team will look to get back in the win column on Thursday night when the team travels to Omaha, Neb., for a showdown with Creighton at 8 p.m. ET.
The contest will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on FOXSportsGO.com and the FOX Sports Mobile app. Jake Ryan and Donny Baarns will be on the call.
The Johnnies will look to claim their first conference victory of the season over the Bluejays for the second-straight year. During the 2017 campaign, Christina Bellero recorded the golden goal off a brilliant through ball from Maia Cabrera in the 105th minute as the Red Storm defeated Creighton, 1-0, in double overtime at Belson Stadium.
Despite the Johnnies not being able to find the back of the net in one of the toughest matches of BIG EAST play against No. 10 Georgetown on Sunday, Cabrera and Zsani Kajan led the Red Storm (4-6-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST), each recording a trio shots. Kajan's three strikes give her a total 37 on the 2018 campaign. Kajan has tallied points in five of the team's 10 contests to lead the BIG EAST with 16 on the season. The Budapest, Hungary, native has also scored at least one goal in five games this season to tie for first in the conference with seven on the year.
Creighton (4-5-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) enters Thursday's match on the heels of a 1-0 BIG EAST victory over Xavier on Sunday. Bluejays' junior Taryn Jakubowski recorded the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to lift Creighton to victory and earn herself a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Sullivan was also recognized by the league on Monday, as she was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week following her performance against the Musketeers. Sullivan made eight saves with five of those coming in the first half alone.
Thursday's contest marks the seventh meeting between the two programs dating back to 1991. Overall, St. John's is 3-2-1 all-time against Creighton and 3-1-1 since the Bluejays joined the BIG EAST before the start of the 2013 season.
