Mackedon finishes inside the top-10 following first two rounds
The St. John's men's golf team fired a two-round 579 in the team's season debut at Bethpage State Park Red Course on Saturday, to enter round three in eighth place.
Junior Gerald Mackedon paced the field for the Red Storm turning in a pair of even par 70s on the day to finish in a tie for ninth. Mackedon's performance was highlighted by five birdies over 36 holes.
Senior Austin Briggs and freshman Jack Simon finished inside the top-30 for St. John's, both turning in a 5-over par through two rounds of play.
Dublin, Ireland, native Ross Moore fired a pair of 73s over two rounds to finish at 6-over par. The senior's two-round effort was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the par-4 second and 10th holes over the final 18. James Smoot kicked off his junior campaign with scores of 74-75.
Freshman Tyler Gerbavsits gave a solid effort in his first collegiate appearance for the Red Storm, turning in scores of 72-76.
Matthew Sweeney turned in a two round total of 153, while Jonathan Spicci and Andrew Baek rounded out scoring for the nine-man squad, both finishing with a 157.
Following two rounds of play, Rhode Island paces the field with an even par 560. Leading the Individuals is Rhode Island's Dawson Jones who carded a pair of 68s to finish four-under on the day.
The Johnnies, who are seeking victory at the event for the first time since 2005, will begin their third round tomorrow at 9:35 a.m.
