QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2019) – The St. John's track & field team will open 2019 at the prestigious New Balance Track and Field Armory on Saturday, competing in the Lions Indoor Invitational.
"We are looking forward to getting back to competition after the long holiday break," said St. John's head coach Jim Hurt. "We posted excellent performances at both the Fordham Lid-Lifter meet and our Bill Ward meet back in December, so we are excited to see what we can do in the New Year."
The meet, hosted by The College of New Jersey, will feature 30 programs from across all three divisions and mark the first of three visits for the Red Storm at Manhattan's most prestigious indoor venue.
In its last meet of 2018, St. John's captured eight first-place finishes and swept four events – triple jump, shot put, weight throw and 200-meter dash – at the Bill Ward Invitational at St. Anthony's High School in South Huntington, N.Y.
One of those first place finishers was senior Jennifer Odoemene, who ended 2018 on a high note. She earned BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors after hurling a career-best 18.18 meters in the weight throw, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships, at the Bill Ward Invitational. Junior Bernadette McGowan also posted a personal-best and an ECAC qualifying distance of 17.00 meters to finish in second place behind Odoemene.
Overall, Destiny Davis had a strong showing, sprinting to first with a time of 25.19 second in the 200-meter dash. Davis also broke her personal best in the 60-meter with a time of 7.87 for second place.
St. John's is projected to have participants in the following events: 60-meter hurdles, mile run, 60-meter dash, 200-meter run, 400-meter run, 500-meter run, 800-meter run, 1000-meter run, 3000-meter run, 4x400-meter relay, 4x800-meter relay weight throw, shot put, long jump, triple jump, and high jump.
"We have plenty of fire power across the event spectrum and look forward to blasting off the New Year with some great performances," said Hurt
