The Red Storm (8-7, 1-3 BIG EAST) aim to bounce back from a heartbreaking overtime setback, 67-66, to Providence on Friday afternoon. Despite a 16-point effort from Alisha Kebbe, including a clutch triple with four seconds left in regulation to send the Johnnies into overtime, the Red Storm came up just short in the extra period.
Â
With under a second to play in the bonus period, and the score knotted at 66, St. John's appeared to come up with a crucial stop and force a second overtime. However Akina Wellere was called for a foul on the rebound, giving the Friars' Maddie Jolin two chances to put her team ahead. She missed the first, but made the second to seal the win for Providence.
Â
In addition to Kebbe's 16-point effort, Curteeona Brelove and Qadashah Hoppie both eclipsed double figures for the Johnnies on Friday. Brelove came up with her third double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 boards, while Hoppie stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, three assists and three steals.
Â
Hoppie has been a force behind the Johnnies offense this season. The Staten Island native has scored double figures in three of the team's four conference games, to pace the Johnnies with 14.0 points per contest during league play.
Â
Creighton and St. John's have met a total 16 times, dating back to 1997, with the all-time series knotted at eight wins apiece. Creighton beat the Johnnies in two of the team's three meetings last year, with the Bluejays most recent victory coming in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament on March 4, 2018.
Â
This marked the first time in the history of the two Programs that Creighton defeated St. John's in the postseason, as the Johnnies hold a 4-1 edge on the Bluejays.
Â
Creighton (8-8, 2-3 BIG EAST) is on the backend of a two-game road swing, as the Bluejays fell at Seton Hall, 82-75, on Friday despite a 26-point effort from Jaylyn Agnew. The Bluejays, pose another tough test for St. John's due to their high scoring ability from beyond the arc. Creighton ranks second in the BIG EAST and third in the nation for three-pointers made, netting 10.9 on average per contest.
Â
After taking on Creighton, the Red Storm will travel to Chicago for a Friday night matchup with DePaul at 8 p.m. ET, before continuing its two-game road swing in Milwaukee against No. 15/14 Marquette on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
