St. John’s Wins Spring Season Opener over Fairfield, 5-2

Coach Leo’s squad starts the spring season on a high note with a commanding win over the Stags.
FLUSHING, N.Y. – It was another stellar spring opener for the St. John's Women's Tennis team as they defeated Fairfield on Friday afternoon, 5-2, at the USTA National Tennis Center.
This afternoon's win over Fairfield marked the fifth time in the last six years that the Red Storm has started its spring season with a victory.
"The team is excited to have the 2019 spring season underway," said head coach Lauren Leo. "Today's match against Fairfield was a good start and we are looking forward to the opportunity to compete against UMass on Sunday."
In doubles play, St. John's quickly won the first two matches from the No. 1 and 3 positions, earning them the first point of the afternoon.
In the No. 1 match, Jessica Livianu and Oceane Garibal wasted no time as they defeated Fairfield's Diana Promos and Emily Lombardi, 6-0.
The senior duo of Olaya Inclan Solis and Delia Arranz solidified the doubles point for the Johnnies at the No. 3 position as they took care of Fairfield's Sophia Prinos and Anna Komer, 6-2.
In singles play, Livianu continued her dominant play in the No. 1 spot and finished with a perfect (6-0, 6-0) rout over Fairfield's Diana Prinos.
Newcomer Najah Dawson wrapped up her singles match against Sophia Prinos in the No. 4 match (6-2, 6-1) to give St. John's their second singles point.
After battling to win the first set 7-5, Oceane Garibal fought off Komer to take the No. 3 match, (7-5, 6-3).
Solis once again won the clinching match for the Johnnies as she did throughout the BIG EAST postseason last year, defeating Fairfield's No. 2, Aina March, (6-4, 6-4) to give the Red Storm the 5-2 victory.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday as they host UMass at Cunningham Park at 7:30 p.m.
