With January winding down, the St. John's women's tennis team will kick off its spring season with a pair of home matches this weekend.
The Red Storm will welcome Fairfield on Friday at noon at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing before hosting UMass on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. at Cunningham Park.
Fairfield put together an impressive fall campaign, going 4-0 and dropping a total of just five matches. Last year, UMass pieced together a 12-7 record during the spring, including a 3-2 mark in Atlantic 10 action. The Minutewomen reached the final match of the Atlantic 10 Championship before falling to VCU, 4-2.
This will mark the fourth-consecutive season the Johnnies have opened their home schedule with Fairfield, sweeping the Stags in all three of their previous meetings.
St. John's enters the 2019 season following one of the most successful seasons in program history last year, capturing its first-ever BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship and earning an automatic berth to the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament after defeating DePaul, 4-2, in the conference title match. Leo's squad ended the 2017-18 campaign with a 17-6 overall record, including a 4-1 showing in BIG EAST play, marking the program's fourth-straight season with at least 14 wins.
In 2018, the Red Storm was led by two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year, Jessica Livianu. Last year, the Brooklyn native polished off another near-perfect season of singles play during the dual-match season, finishing with a 16-1 record. The junior dropped her opening match of the season due to retiring injury before rattling off 16-straight wins at the top position.
During the fall, Livianu won her second-straight singles title at the Columbia Invitational. Livianu finished with a perfect 3-0 record in the draw, never allowing an opponent to take her to a decisive third set. The junior also reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships in October, marking the third-consecutive year where a St. John's player has advanced to the quarterfinals.
Senior Olaya Inclan Solis will provide leadership to a very young squad this spring as the No. 2 starter. Last spring, Solis posted a 15-7 Posted a 15-7 singles record from the No. 2 position. She was a vital member of last year's BIG EAST title run as she rallied back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set of the title match against DePaul to capture a 6-3, 7-6 victory and clinch the BIG EAST title for the Red Storm.
Coach Leo's squad swings right back into action next weekend with a pair of home matches against Marist and Wagner on Friday before battling Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. on Sunday Feb. 3.
