St. John’s Falls to UMass, 4-3

The Red Storm loses three three-set singles matches in a losing effort to UMass.
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the second straight season, the St. John's Women's Tennis team (1-1) fell one match short of defeating UMass, losing 4-3 early Monday morning at Cunningham Park.
In doubles play, Jessica Livianu and Gabriela Tenorio started the day on the right foot for the Red Storm, capturing a 6-2 win from the No. 1 position. The second flight consisting of Olaya Inclan Solis and Oceane Garibal clinched the doubles point for the Johnnies with a 6-4 victory.
Leading 1-0 and heading into singles matches, St. John's dropped the opening match to see the score tied at 1. Najah Dawson stepped up for the Johnnies with a (6-4, 6-2) win at the No. 4 position to restore the lead.
Livianu continued her impressive form as she would win her top-flight singles match in straight sets, (7-6 (7-0), 6-0).
However, after achieving a 3-1 lead, the Red Storm relinquished four-straight matches, including three three-set thrillers from the No. 2,3, and 5 positions, confirming the 4-3 win for UMass.
St. John's will look to avenge its loss on Feb. 1 as the Red Storm hosts Marist and Wagner in a tri-match at the National Tennis Center, starting at noon.
