Zsani Kajan records a pair of tallies in the Johnnies’ setback
The St. John's women's soccer team fell to Marquette, 3-2, in double overtime on Thursday evening at Belson Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Red Storm's leading scorer Zsani Kajan recorded a pair of tallies on the evening. The effort marked the redshirt junior's second multi-goal outing of the season and the fifth of her Red Storm career.
Addison Hornsey, Alex Madden and Jessica Garziano also etched their names on the score sheet, assisting on the Red Storm's two goals. Garziano's helper marked her fourth of the season, the most by a rookie since Lucy Whipp dished out four during her freshman campaign in 2015.
The Red Storm (4-9-0, 1-3-0, BIG EAST) needed just one shot on target to take a 1-0 lead in the early going, as Kajan found the back of the net for the fifth time this season. The sequence began as Hornsey fired a shot up to a streaking Madden at midfield. The Leicestershire, England, native corralled the ball before sending a lead pass up to Kajan. The Budapest, Hungary, native then powered a rocket towards the center of the cage for the goal.
Twenty minutes later, Kajan added another marker, finding the back of the net for her second time on the evening. Garziano initiated the action, sending a shot towards the cage before Kajan punched it in to give the Johnnies a 2-0 advantage headed into the locker room.
Marquette (4-8-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) got on the board in the 61st minute, as freshman forward Alex Campana chipped in a shot from inside the box to cut the Johnnies' lead in half, 2-1.
Just over 20 minutes later, Marquette struck again, as Kylie Sprecher found the back of the net to knot the game at two and force the contest into overtime.
With the score deadlocked at two, sophomore forward Macey Shock recorded her third goal of the season in the 101st minute to seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.
St. John's will return to action on Sunday, traveling to Indianapolis for an afternoon showdown with the Butler Bulldogs. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
