Red Storm will look to grab second BIG EAST win of the season
Coming off a heartbreaking loss to Marquette on Thursday evening, the St. John's women's soccer team will look to jump back in the win column on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Indianapolis for a matchup with Butler at 1 p.m.
The Red Storm's (4-9-0, 1-3-0 BIG EAST) contest with the Bulldogs (7-4-2, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) can be viewed on Butler's YouTube channel.
Despite the loss to Marquette, redshirt junior Zsani Kajan put forth a heroic effort for the Red Storm. The Budapest, Hungary, native tallied a pair of goals against the Golden Eagles to bump her season total up to six, ranking fifth in the BIG EAST. The multi-goal effort marked Kajan's second of the season and fifth of her Red Storm career.
In Thursday's setback, three different players dished out assists for the Red Storm as Alex Madden, Addison Hornsey and Jessica Garziano all picked up a helper in the game. With an assist on Kajan's second goal, Garziano has recorded a team-high four assists so far this season to rank inside the top-10 in the league. The Melville, N.Y., native is the first rookie to dish out four helpers since Lucy Whipp did so during her 2015 freshman campaign.
Butler enters Sunday's contest sporting a record of 7-4-2 and a 2-1-1 mark against its BIG EAST opponents. The Bulldogs are led offensively by sophomores Katie Soderstorm and Anja Savich. Soderstrom leads the team in points with 19, recording six goals and seven assists on the season. Savich has found the back of the net a team-high seven times, while dishing out three assists for a combined 17 points. Three other Bulldogs have found the back of the net at least two times this season.
Junior keeper Stephanie Rodriguez has played every minute between the pipes for Butler. Rodriguez has grabbed 42 shots and is tallying a 0.96 goals against average to go along with a .764 save percentage.
St. John's and Butler will meet for the ninth time in program history on Sunday afternoon. The Johnnies hold a 4-3-1 advantage in the previous eight contests between the two schools.
The Red Storm defeated the Bulldogs last year, 2-1, at Belson Stadium. In the Johnnies most recent win over Butler, Kajan tallied a pair of goals, while Meredith Reinhardt made a game changing save off a penalty kick in the 78th minute to seal the victory for St. John's.
