Late Goal Lifts Butler Past St. John’s, 1-0
10/13/2019 4:51:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The St. John's women's soccer team played evenly with Butler over 77 minutes on Sunday before the Bulldogs found the back of the net for the eventual game winner in a 1-0 victory at Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl.
With no score on the board and just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest, Anja Savich of Butler played a cross into the box towards Katie Soderstrom. The sophomore midfielder finished in the left corner of the cage to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm defensive unit did a fantastic job limiting the impact of Butler's offense for most of the match. St. John's goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt put forth a valiant effort between the pipes, turning aside seven shots in her fifth start of the season.
On the game, Butler (8-4-2, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) outshot the Red Storm (4-10-0, 1-4-0 BIG EAST) by a 15-9 margin, while the Johnnies held a 4-3 advantage on corners.
Zsani Kajan, Alex Madden and Jessica Garziano led the Red Storm in shots with two apiece on the afternoon. Addison Hornsey, Maia Cabrera and Kayla Mesaros also registered shots for St. John's. Both of Garziano's opportunities were on goal but the freshman midfielder could not break though Butler's keeper Stephanie Rodriguez.
Neither team managed to muster up much offense in the opening half, as the Bulldogs' Taylor Crowe recorded the period's first shot nearly 12 minutes into the action. Four minutes later, Madden registered the Johnnies' first shot of the afternoon but saw her attempt sail right to keep both teams off the board.
At the intermission, Butler held a 7-5 edge in shots, with the Johnnies leading, 3-1, in corners.
Coming out of the locker room, Garziano and Madden fired off the first two shots of the latter stanza but could not snap the scoreless deadlock.
The Johnnies and the Bulldogs traded opportunities over the next few minutes, until Butler punched in the lone goal of the match in the 78th minute to seal the victory.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday, welcoming Xavier to Belson Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest with the Musketeers.
