St. John’s places second overall in the event
St. John's Linda Wang earned her second individual title of the fall season on Tuesday, taking medalist honors at the Towson Invitational.
Wang posted an even-par 72 over the final 18 holes to finish five shots clear of Towson's Julia Calomiris.
Wang opened the day with a pair of pars, before carding a double bogey on the third hole. The senior bounced back, draining four pars and two birdies to make the turn at level par. Wang's back nine consisted of seven pars, a bogey and a birdie at the par-five 12th hole.
The Fresh Meadows, N.Y., native finished with a two-round total of three-under 141 to claim the sixth title of her Red Storm career.
Towson and St. John's both finished with a two-round score of 597 to share the top spot in the team race. The Tigers earned the team title based on a tiebreaker, as their no. 5 golfer finished two-strokes ahead of St. John's fifth golfer.
"It was great to see Linda get another tournament title under her belt," Head Coach Ambry Bishop said. "Our team was hoping for better results today, but Towson played great in the final round and was very deserving of the team title. We learned from today and it will make us stronger for next week at Lehigh."
Freshman Cloe Clocchiatti and sophomore Jessie Kweon both turned in a final-round score of 77 to finish fourth and sixth in the standings.
Competing as an individual, junior Andrea Sanchez tied for 10th place with a 76 on the day.
Senior Kaitleen Shee and freshman Jill Beglin tied for 15th place, turning in a 75 and 76, respectively.
Freshman Laia Barro jumped up four spots in the standings, carding a 77 to tie for 23rd place.
St. John's will wrap up the fall slate on Oct. 21-22, when the team travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Lehigh Invitational.
