Meredith Reinhardt makes a season-high nine saves in St. John’s setback
The St. John's women's soccer team fell to Xavier, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
Despite the loss, goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt made a season-high nine stops for the Red Storm (4-11-0, 1-5-0 BIG EAST). The Scottsdale, Ariz., native has now grabbed a combined 39 saves this season.
Three different Johnnies recorded a shot on the afternoon, as Isabelle Aviza, Jessica Garziano and Zsani Kajan all made an attempt to put St. John's on the board. Aviza registered the Johnnies' lone try on target, but was denied by the Musketeers' keeper.
Xavier (11-3-2, 4-2-0 BIG EAST) wasted no time getting on the board, as the league's leading scorer Samantha Dewey found the back of the net in the eighth minute. Sydney Schembri sent a ball into the box that found Dewey, who powered a shot to the right corner of the cage to put the Musketeers up, 1-0. The goal marked the 13th of the season for Dewey.
The Musketeers fired off six more shots over the remainder of the opening half, but the Red Storm's backline withstood the flurry of Xavier chances to keep the score, 1-0, at the intermission.
Just three minutes into the second half, the Musketeers found the back of the net for the second time on the afternoon. Sophomore forward Brooke Sroka sent a volley to the far corner of the cage, extending Xavier's lead to 2-0 early in the second stanza.
In the 63rd minute, St. John's saw its best scoring opportunity of the contest. The sequence began as sophomore Kayla Mesaros sent a pass up to an open Kajan. The Budapest, Hungary, native moved toward the top of the box and fired a shot that rang off the cross bar to keep the Red Storm off the board.
With just over two minutes left to play, the Musketeers scored their last goal of the game as Maddie Thiss netted her first score of the season, giving Xavier the 3-0 advantage.
The Johnnies will return to action on Oct. 24, as the Red Storm travels to Villanova for a 4 p.m. contest with the Wildcats.
