Kaitleen Shee wins in playoff to earn medalist honors
Led by Kaitleen Shee's first individual championship of the season, the St. John's women's golf program took home the team title at the Lehigh Invitational on Tuesday at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
After earning medalist honors at the Lehigh Invitational a season ago, Shee reclaimed her title on Tuesday afternoon ousting Quinnipiac's Queenie Lai in a playoff.
Coming off a first-round 75 on day one of the event, Shee fired a final round 77 to sit in a tie for first with Lai. The Irvine, Calif., native bested her competition by tapping in a birdie on the first playoff hole to finish atop the leaderboard.
"I am so proud of the team and Kaitleen this week," said Head Coach Ambry Bishop. "Today was not the best weather and everyone stayed focused and came in with some consistent scores despite the conditions. I am so happy for and proud of Kaitleen. She got off to a rough start at the beginning of the fall season, but really worked hard and fought back each week to get herself in a position to win today. She was very strong in the playoff to have a tap in birdie to win the title."
Classmate Linda Wang finished one-stroke back of Shee, turning in scores of 75 and 78 to finish in a three-way tie for third. The Fresh Meadows, N.Y., native drained a combined four birdies over 36 holes.
Freshmen Cloe Clocchiatti and Laia Barro both signed off on a 156 over two rounds to finish in a tie for 10th place. Sophomore Jessie Kweon sat one-stroke back of Clocchiatti and Barro turning in a combined score of 157.
"Jessie and Cloe bounced back really well and were very instrumental in our low team round of the day," said Coach Bishop. "This event is great momentum heading into the off season and gives us lots to look forward to heading into spring."
Junior Andrea Sanchez signed off on an 81 and 79 over two rounds to place 19th overall.
Freshman Jill Beglin rounded out scoring for the Red Storm with scores of 80 and 83 to place 23rd in the standings.
