Maia Cabrera registers the first goal of her Red Storm career
The St. John's women's soccer team took its annual meeting with local rival Seton Hall, 1-0, on Thursday night at Belson Stadium.
With the victory over Seton Hall, the Johnnies have extended their win streak to eight against the Pirates and now own an all-time edge of 19-5-1.
Maia Cabrera recorded the first goal of her Red Storm career, finding the back of the net in the 42nd minute off a long pass from freshman Jessica Garziano. The helper marked the third of Garziano's young and promising St. John's tenure.
Redshirt junior Meredith Reinhardt played the full 90 minutes between the pipes for St. John's, picking up her second win of the season. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native turned aside four of the Pirates' shot attempts.
In her first career start for the Red Storm, Samantha Gordon registered a pair of shots for the Johnnies.
St. John's (4-7-0, 1-1-0) outshot Seton Hall (1-7-1, 0-2-0), 14-9, in the game, including a 6-4 margin on goal.
After registering seven shot attempts in the early going in the contest, St. John's jumped ahead in the 42nd minute. Garziano began the sequence with a towering pass up to Cabrera inside the box. The junior midfielder beat out her defender, chipping a left-footed try past the Pirates' keeper to put the Red Storm on top 1-0.
Coming out of the locker room, Zsani Kajan fired off three chances in the first 10 minutes of action, including two looks on goal. The Budapest, Hungary, native registered a game-high six shots on the evening with two attempts on target.
In need of an equalizer, Seton Hall tried to press the issue in the Red Storm's defensive zone, but the Johnnies stood tall. The St. John's backline neutralized three Seton Hall threats in the final half to seal the victory.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Chicago to take on DePaul at 2 p.m. ET.
