The Red Storm returns to Belson on Thursday night
The St. John's women's soccer team dropped its second BIG EAST decision on Sunday afternoon, falling to DePaul, 2-0, at Wish Field.
DePaul's leading scorer Morgan Turner and freshman Bina Saipi both scored for the Blue Demons (5-5-2, 2-1-0 BIG EAST).
Despite the loss, Meredith Reinhardt made eight stops in net for the Red Storm (4-8-0, 1-2-0 BIG EAST), with six of those coming in the first half alone.
The Johnnies' leading goal scorer Zsani Kajan accounted for five of St. John's six shots, while freshman Jessica Garziano also added a tally on target for the Red Storm. Four of Kajan's five tries were on goal.
DePaul controlled possession in the early going of the contest, firing off the first six shots, including a goal by Turner in the 35th minute. On the other side of the score, DePaul continued to control the momentum during the first 45 minutes, not allowing a shot from the Red Strom as the Blue Demons entered the break with a 1-0 lead.
In the opening half, Reinhardt turned aside six DePaul shots to keep the Red Storm within one at the intermission.
St. John's started to swing the game's momentum in the second half, outshooting the Blue Demons, 6-5. Kajan appeared to be on the cusp of breaking through over the final 45 minutes. The Budapest, Hungary, native fired off all five of her shot attempts in the second stanza, but could not manage to send one home.
In the 64th minute, the Blue Demons added an insurance tally, as Saipi netted her first career goal for DePaul.
With just five minutes left to play, Garziano send a long ball towards the cage but DePaul's keeper Mollie Eriksson jumped up and grabbed it to keep the Johnnies off the board.
The Red Storm will return to action on Thursday evening, welcoming Marquette to Belson Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
