The Red Storm will look for its second-straight win in BIG EAST play
After picking up its first win of BIG EAST action with a 1-0 victory over Seton Hall on Thursday night at Belson Stadium, the St. John's women's soccer team will travel to the Windy City to take on DePaul on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
The Red Storm's (4-7-0, 1-1-0) contest with DePaul can be viewed on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi. The broadcast can also be accessed on BIG EAST's YouTube channel, Twitter handle and Caffeine channel (www.Caffeine.tv/BEDN).
Maia Cabrera scored her first career goal in the Red Storm's victory over the Pirates on Thursday evening, becoming one of five Johnnies to find the back of the net this season. With a goal against Seton Hall, the junior midfielder bumped her season point total up to a career-high four, ranking second on the squad behind the Johnnies' leading scorer Zsani Kajan.
In Thursday's contest, freshman Jessica Garziano picked up an assist on Cabrera's game-winning goal. The rookie from Mellville, N.Y., now paces the Johnnies with three helpers on the season.
The Red Storm's backline has shut out three of its last five opponents. Naya Lipkens and Meredith Reinhardt have split time between the pipes for St. John's. Seeing action in 10 games so far this year, Lipkens has stopped 48 shots, for the third highest save total in the league. In four matches so far in 2019, Reinhardt has turned aside 12 shots and is boasting a perfect 2-0 record, including the team's most recent shutout against Seton Hall.
St. John's and DePaul will meet for the ninth time in the history of the two programs on Sunday, with the Blue Demons holding a 4-3-1 edge. The Red Storm's last win over DePaul came in 2016 when former St. John's standout Samie Scaffidi recorded a goal in the 70th minute to lift the Johnnies to a 1-0 victory at Belson Stadium.
DePaul (4-5-2, 1-1-0) enters the contest on the heels of a 2-1 victory over Butler on Thursday afternoon at Wish Field. The Blue Demons took a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute off goals from Kristin Boos and Morgan Turner. The Bulldogs pulled the match within one just before the half, but were unable to convert in the latter stanza.
Turner and Boos lead the Blue Demons offensively with eight points apiece. Turner has recorded a team-high four goals this year, while Boos has found the back of the net three times and has dished out two assists.
