LJ Figueroa and Mustapha Heron combine for 53 points in the win
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2019) – Playing its final tune-up before the official start of the 2019-20 regular season, the St. John's men's basketball team routed Queens College by a score of 94-59 in an exhibition contest on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
Four Johnnies finished in double figures in the team's first public intercollegiate action under the direction of Head Coach Mike Anderson.
LJ Figueroa tallied a game-high 28 points, eight rebounds and three assists, connecting on 10 of his 18 tries from the floor, including a 7-of-13 effort from beyond the arc. Fellow Preseason Second Team All-BIG EAST selection Mustapha Heron added 25 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Sophomore big men Josh Roberts and Marcellus Earlington also finished in double figures, tallying 14 and 12 points, respectively. Roberts also chipped in seven boards and two blocks for the Johnnies.
Guards Nick Rutherford and Greg Williams Jr. tallied five assists apiece on the evening while David Caraher added seven points in his first game action at Carnesecca Arena.
As a team, St. John's shot 49.3 percent from the floor (37-of-75) and assisted on 24 of its 37 made field goals.
Queens College came out of the gate firing, using an early 14-3 run to move ahead by nine with five minutes gone in the contest.
The Johnnies slowly but surely shook off the cobwebs, responding with a lopsided run of their own to blow the game open early. A Rutherford steal-and-score with 8:14 to play in the first half made it 28-16 St. John's, capping a 23-2 spurt over the span of six and a half minutes.
St. John's continued to expand its lead over the closing minutes of the opening stanza, as an Earlington bucket in the closing seconds gave the Red Storm a 48-26 edge heading into the locker room.
With just about seven minutes gone in the second half, Queens whittled the Red Storm advantage to as little as 12, 59-47, following a 3-pointer from Elijah Bovell, who scored a team-high 22 points on the evening for the Knights. From there, St. John's outscored Queens 35-12 the rest of the way, cruising to a 35-point victory.
The Red Storm will officially kick off the 2019-20 campaign on Wednesday, Nov. 6, playing host to Mercer at 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live nationally on FS1.
